A Raw Natural Diet

Canine Feeding  |  Canine Conditioning  |  Canine & Boxer Health

A raw, natural diet is also known as a BARF diet.  BARF stands for "Biologically Appropriate Raw Food" or "Bones and Raw Food". A raw natural diet has many benefits for a Boxer. You get to control the quality of the food your Boxer is eating and can add or takeaway supplements as and when required.
Raw diets are easy to prepare
It is a very flexible diet that suits Boxers. Before starting your Boxer on a raw natural diet make sure you understand the principles of this way of feeding. This type of diet is easy to feed and prepare but a book or two on the subject are great references. A good starting place is the book "Give Your Dog A Bone" by Dr Ian Billinghurst. Other great books are: "Raw Meaty Bones" by Tom Lonsdale; "Ultimate Diet" by Kymythy Schultze; "Dr Pitcairn's complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats" and "Switching to Raw" by Susan Johnson.

What makes up a raw natural diet? The basics are raw meat and raw meaty bones, raw processed vegetables, as well as dairy foods, eggs, fish, offal, muscle meats, fruit etc, and maybe some supplements. This provides an excellent balanced diet and you are in total control of the quality of the ingredients your dog eats. Some people do not feed dairy foods, and some do not feed grains. After a bit of research (also see the links below) you can decide what type of natural diet suits your dog best. Feeding multiple dogs on raw natural diets is wonderful as you can change the diet slightly for each individual's needs.

The best thing about feeding a natural diet is that you are providing your Boxer with food to ensure optimum health. The worst thing? Probably that it takes a little longer to prepare than commercial food.

What about when you travel and feed a natural diet? This is easy to manage as all the ingredients are available everywhere so you can buy them along the way. If this is not possible it is easy to carry some chicken wings or necks, or if only one night away, it could be the 'fast' night. These days you can also purchase pre-made BARF meals or pre-made natural meals for your dog, as well as 'natural' type mixes which are added to raw meat and these options are suitable for travel.

How do raw foods diet ingredients compare to commercial diet ingredients?  Below is a table - on the left are lists of ingredients found on the packet of top selling premium kibbles, and on the right is a list of ingredients in our raw foods diet.  This is in no way whatsoever a scientific study, we just simply listed the kibble ingredients and then what we feed. The food we feed our Boxers is always human grade and organic where possible. This is here for information only (to be honest, we are not even sure what some of the ingredients in the kibble are).
