Table Training

The pause table should be made a lot of fun for your Boxer from the out start.  As they gain agility confidence and are racing around the course the stop on the table could be perceived as a bit of a bummer (awww - do we have to stop now?).  If the table is made enjoyable from word go this problem may not occur.  The table presents many opportunities for us as handlers to reward and play with our Boxer.  Play tug with your dog on the table, treat him or her on the table, and generally make it a great place to be.

The rules for table performance vary between agility organisations worldwide and can also differ between the levels of competition in an organisation.  For example, in Starters the dog may be able to take up any position on the table while in Masters (or Open or Elite depending on the flavour of agility), a drop may be required.  Have fun with training all positions (sit, stand and drop) on the table as you never know when you might need them.

Teaching a U-Turn on the table may be quite handy for a Boxer.  Some Boxer's like to slide on the table and may tip it or slide out off the other side.  If you teach your Boxer to jump on the table and immediately turn back towards you this ceases to become as much of a problem.  You can then position yourself ready for the next obstacle.  It goes without saying that your Boxer will need to learn to actually stay on the table.  Alter the time you keep him or her on the table.  Make it 2 seconds, then 10 seconds, then 4 seconds etc - it's amazing how quickly our dogs work out 5 seconds if that is all we do.
